Joan Hawkey

Joan Hawkey (Lesley’s mum)

The first time I visited, was in 1997/8, and I have never forgotten the experience. To me it’s PARADISE!!

I couldn't believe such a place existed.  It was a car trip along the busy freeway, only an hour from the city, and then the boat trip up the river from Kangaroo Point.  A fast burst of speed with no restriction, for maybe 5 minutes, and then a slow, “no wash” 4 knots speed zone as we reach Milsons Passage and the first of the houses along the river bank.

"On my way"
Then The Boathouse appears and we have arrived – just AMAZING.  There are many boatsheds along the shore but only one with its own veranda, a solid stone chimney and stained glass window: this one!

I loved the house, such peace and tranquility, and the balcony, overlooking the river, where I spent many hours just watching the birds and little ducklings swimming around.  I counted the babies each day and hoped they would all survive.

The lovely people I met, especially Betty and her little dog (Mitzie) and Les and Jean getting up and feeding all the birds congregating at their fence, at about 5.30am every morning.  I used to go out to watch about 12 different species in such wonderful colours and sounds.

"Somewhere under the rainbow......."

I must say, I worried about Stewart getting from the boat to the house.  I thought he was so brave on his ‘machine’. Lesley always taking things in her stride!

Such magic and I hope it will always be there to support Lesley and Stewart.

"No, we aren't sinking, but high tide can be very high!"
