Hose Reel Invention

Collapsible flat-lay fabric fire hoses are an essential component of fire fighters’ equipment word wide.  Crucially, fabric hoses have to be fully rolled out before the hydrant or pump is turned on and water is fed into them.

On level, even ground, “firies” run the hose out in a style similar to bowling a lawn bowl.  But in rugged hilly conditions where many bushfires are fought, this is not really practicable.

So the Milsons Passage Bushfire Brigade came up with the Portable Collapsible Fire Hose Reel, specially designed and built to cope with these problems.

Rolls of flat fire hose are taken to fires on metal reels fitted with handles.  The hose simply unwinds as the fire fighter moves up from the pump up towards the fire.

To rewind the hose to move to another location – normally another difficult task, the fire fighter simply uses the winding crank stored on the reel to role the hose in.

The system is quick, highly portable, and deals successfully with many of the difficulties and dangers of fighting fires in rough and difficult terrain.
