A big thanks to everyone who participated in the Milsons Passage Field Day on Saturday 6th October.
With as many as 30 adults and children from Milsons Passage, Bar Point and Cheero Point and a local oyster farmer joining staff from OceanWatch, Hawkesbury Nepean Catchment Management Authority, Department of Primary Industries and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, the day was a great success.
The lunchtime BBQ began under a blazing sun, with neighbouring residents providing the setting for an enjoyable welcome.
Tegan Burton, NPWS Ranger for Muogamarra Nature Reserve, gave an introduction to the OceanWatch funded project being implemented by NPWS at the old house site south of Milsons Passage and in adjacent endangered Coastal Saltmarsh.
Despite howling winds, many participants put their hand up for a field trip so Rob Moxham, local oyster farmer, took the group by barge to the work site.
We wandered the saltmarsh, theorising about past farming activities there and inspecting the lantana which will soon be removed. Then it was back to the house site for a hands-on taste of what’s to come – pulling out lantana, climbing cactus, crofton weed and other out-of-control plants that once lived in the garden. There was so much energy it was difficult to say it was eventually time to go.
Restoration of this site is going to take a long-term approach, and the NPWS is welcoming any support from the local community. Keep an eye out for dates of upcoming mid-week and weekend working days, or contact Tegan direct for more information : tegan.burton@environment.nsw.gov.au or 9471 9322.
